NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Hackers were able to get personal information, which has included Social Security numbers in some cases, for more than 400 people during a data breach in New Haven last year, the city announced on Tuesday.

About $6 million was taken from New Haven Public Schools in the June 2023 cyberattack. The city has been able to recover about $5.1 million of the stolen funds.

Hackers were able to access the emails of the chief operation officer of New Haven Public Schools this summer.

“The intent of these criminals was to steal money from New Haven Public School students,” Mayor Justin Elicker said in a written statement. “Fortunately, with the help of our law enforcement partners, we’ve been able to recover most of those funds. However, during this cyberattack, these criminals also had the potential to access personal information of individuals. Thankfully, the City is not aware of any identify theft or fraud stemming from this exposure of information.”

Information was stolen from 404 people, which include city employees, retirees and vendors. The city is mailing letters to 334 people who were impacted, but are trying to find contact information for 70 others.

Stolen information has included names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account numbers, tax identification numbers, health insurance information and medical information.

Victims will receive a year of member to identity protection and credit monitoring. Elicker said the city has also taken steps to strengthen its cybersecurity.

No arrests have been made in the case.
